Reports have shown that the North London Waste Authority is the second largest waste disposal authority in the country. It serves nearly 1.9 million people and arranges the disposal of roughly around 845,000 tonnes of waste each year.

The North London Waste Authority has a campaign called ‘Real Nappy Week’ which they are celebrating between the 18^th to the 24^th April, offering a £54.15 subsidy towards reusable nappies -that is part of the Wise Up To Waste campaign.

The reusable nappies are made of fabric and come with biodegradable (flushable) paper liners or washable (cotton, silk and fleece) liners.

Parents who have a baby under 18 months are encouraged by the North London Waste Authority to buy the reusable nappies in North London to claim the £54.15 to help with the cost of buying their first set of reusable nappies.

On average, a child is estimated to go through 6,000 nappies roughly before the child is potty trained, which creates a tonne of household waste that may go to a landfill.

The reason behind the North London Waste Authority offering the £54.15 subsidy, is because the £54.15 is equivalent to the average cost of disposing of children’s nappies. This is in a bid to offer alternatives to the disposable nappy which make up 4% of household waste sent to landfill.

The other boroughs that are participating in the subsidy scheme include Camden, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest with other boroughs such as Barnet and Enfield operating a cash-back scheme.
