The area of Walthamstow is full of young, energetic people, as a result the eating out scene has really taken off. Whether it be fast food or a nice meal, there is something to suit everyone’s appetite. The spectrum of food should not however be a springboard for poor food hygiene, fast food or slow food, clean food is a must!
Unfortunately this week a fast food restaurant called Hamburger Grill on Walthamstow High Street was shut down by the food hygiene officers. It has been reported that the officers found mouse droppings, mouldy black pudding and bacon that was ‘turning green’.
The food hygiene officers decided to visit the food establishment after a complaint from a paying customer, who had seen a rat in the toilets. The inspection report details that there were many instances of poor hygiene at the fast food place.
The inspectors reported that mouse droppings were found on a shelf where food and plates were being stored, and packets of nuts and dried fruit had been chewed by mice. A large rat hole was found in a cupboard along with a mouse hole in the serving area.
With the amount of issues found at the restaurant it was immediately served with a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice, which meant it had to close immediately pending resolution of all hygiene issues.
Hopefully this is not a growing trend for the area but earlier this year Environmental Health Officers ordered the closure of another takeaway restaurant in Walthamstow after finding raw human sewage smeared on the floor.

To the local residents of Walthamstow, and for those around the area, the Snooker hall building on the corner of Hoe Street and Forest Road is a popular landmark. The building most recently traded as Hurricane Snooker Club, owned by Rileys. Recently, two large murals were painted on the side of the building at 1 Hoe Street as part of the Wood Street Walls project.
Unfortunately a total of 30 of Rileys clubs were closed when the company went into administration. The firm’s assets were sold to Valiant Sports, which retained 1,200 of 1,400 staff operating other clubs under the Rileys name.
In the summer of 2015 an application was made to knock down the building to make way for new homes. The proposed development includes ten one-bedroom flats, nine two-bedroom properties and three three- bedroom flats.

An innovative new process to turn disposable coffee (and Tea) cups into a durable resin is being hailed as a breakthrough to trigger recycling of these unsustainable paper cups. Less than 0.25% of the estimated 3 billion paper cups used each year in the UK are currently recycled, meaning the vast majority end up in landfill or energy-from-waste incinerators.
The problem with the waste of the paper cups is so serious that earlier this year the government even suggested adding a new TAX on paper cups.
The initiative is however being challenged by some due to the construction of the paper cups, the material used to produce them is a problem. Paper cups are made from paper fibre and an additional plastic layer for waterproofing, thus making them extremely complex and troublesome to recycle as each layer must be painstakingly separated from the other.
Due to their construction and materials used to make them, paper cups are not widely accepted in household recycling collections. And, some high street coffee shops have faced warnings about symbols on their cups suggesting they are easily recyclable.

Hopefully the weather is about to turn (Can you believe its this cold in June!), many of us will put our gloves on and finally clean out the garden. Over the winter so much stuff gathers out there it’s shocking what you might find.
Getting rid of garden waste can be a little problematic depending on what it is and where you live. Some councils provide a special bin for your garden waste and collect it as part of your household collection. If not, you will have to recycle all garden waste at a designated recycling centre.
If your local authority provides a sack or bin for garden waste, make sure you follow any instructions highlighting what can and can’t be included. Do not include any other items in your garden waste recycling, unless your council tells you that it’s ok
If you are taking your garden waste to your local recycling centre, use a strong, durable bag or even rubble sack. Most centres require you to empty the content of the bag into the designated area, so do not chuck the bag in too!
What garden waste can be recycled?
These are the common garden waste items that can be recycled:
- Leaves and flowers
- Grass and weeds
- Tree bark and pruned branches
- Clippings and twigs
- Home-grown fruit or vegetables
