Newham Rubbish Collection
Newham council has introduced a new campaign called ‘Keep Newham Clean’ where residents and any passers-by through the borough are urged to keep Newham free of rubbish as the council invests more money into Newham Street cleaning and law enforcement.
The main idea of the “Keep Newham Clean” campaign is to encourage people to take pride in the area they live in to stay clean and rubbish free by using the cleaning service that is provided by the council. This year the borough will launch a host of new initiatives to clamp down on Newham’s rubbish problem. There will be a new charge of £20 for bulky waste collection of six or more items which has been launched for a 12 months trial.

A new service will include Weekend Street cleaning, which will be promoted by the council to inform local residents of their services and extra resources employed to target those fly-tipping hot spots to cut down the pile up of rubbish.
This was put in motion after Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales and cabinet members agreed to extra invest in the latest budget to respond to residents who have said that their top priorities were to live in a clean and rubbish free area where they feel safe.

Reports have shown that the North London Waste Authority is the second largest waste disposal authority in the country. It serves nearly 1.9 million people and arranges the disposal of roughly around 845,000 tonnes of waste each year.
The North London Waste Authority has a campaign called ‘Real Nappy Week’ which they are celebrating between the 18th to the 24th April, offering a £54.15 subsidy towards reusable nappies -that is part of the Wise Up To Waste campaign.
The reusable nappies are made of fabric and come with biodegradable (flushable) paper liners or washable (cotton, silk and fleece) liners.
Parents who have a baby under 18 months are encouraged by the North London Waste Authority to buy the reusable nappies in North London to claim the £54.15 to help with the cost of buying their first set of reusable nappies.
On average, a child is estimated to go through 6,000 nappies roughly before the child is potty trained, which creates a tonne of household waste that may go to a landfill.
The reason behind the North London Waste Authority offering the £54.15 subsidy, is because the £54.15 is equivalent to the average cost of disposing of children’s nappies. This is in a bid to offer alternatives to the disposable nappy which make up 4% of household waste sent to landfill.
The other boroughs that are participating in the subsidy scheme include Camden, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest with other boroughs such as Barnet and Enfield operating a cash-back scheme.

Did you know that if we cut down food waste around the world it could reduce emissions of our planet’s warming gases? As a result this can lessen the impact of climate change such as constant weather changes and rising sea levels.
Agriculture is a big part of climate change, with it accounting for more than 20% of overall global greenhouse gas emissions in 2010. If we avoid food loss and waste, we would cut down unnecessary gas emissions and help mitigate climate change which can help drop down to 14% by 2050.
It has beeen reported that around 30-40% of food produced around the world goes to waste due to it being spoiled after it is harvested and transported or thrown away by either consumers or shops. The food waste is expected to significantly increase if emerging economies like China and India adopt he western food habits.
Cutting food waste and distributing the world’s surplus food where it is needed could help tackle hunger in places that do not have enough – especially given that land to expand farming is limited.
While food demand per person remains constant globally, in the last five decades food availability has rapidly increased – hiking the emissions related to growing surplus food by more than 300%.
