To the local residents of Walthamstow, and for those around the area, the Snooker hall building on the corner of Hoe Street and Forest Road is a popular landmark. The building most recently traded as Hurricane Snooker Club, owned by Rileys. Recently, two large murals were painted on the side of the building at 1 Hoe Street as part of the Wood Street Walls project.
Unfortunately a total of 30 of Rileys clubs were closed when the company went into administration. The firm’s assets were sold to Valiant Sports, which retained 1,200 of 1,400 staff operating other clubs under the Rileys name.
In the summer of 2015 an application was made to knock down the building to make way for new homes. The proposed development includes ten one-bedroom flats, nine two-bedroom properties and three three- bedroom flats.
Now, the plans have been approved by the local council, members of Waltham Forest council’s planning committee gave the green light to the plans at a meeting on Tuesday, June 7 2016.
So in the next few months an iconic building and landmark in Walthamstow will be torn down to create some much needed new homes in London. Unfortunately the design of the new building has left no provisions for affordable housing.
