What happens to London’s Waste? Video

This video looks at London’s municipal waste and what can happen after it is collected. Household waste services are managed by London’s boroughs and the City of London, with arrangements for treatment and disposal varying between areas. Privately collected business and household waste follows the arrangements made by the waste collector; the video is not a guide to every collection or treatment route.

What happens after waste is collected?

The route depends on the materials and their condition. Items suitable for reuse may be kept in use, while recyclable materials can be separated and sent for recycling. Other waste may go through recovery, including energy recovery, or disposal. These are different routes, and not every item can be recycled.

The waste hierarchy prioritises preventing waste, preparing items for reuse and recycling before other recovery and disposal. This older video provides background rather than confirmation of current facilities, processes or recycling rates.
