Reports show that in the North of England the levels of rubbish sent to landfill has been slashed from 66% in 2010 to just 3% over the past year.
A lot of this achievement can be tracked back to an energy-from- waste treatment facility in Tesside that opened in April 2014. 67,000 of 77,000 tonnes of waste collected across South Tyneside was from households and the remaining waste was collected from other sources including commercial services. The facility is a vital part to a £20 million Strategic Waste Partnership between South Tyneside, Gateshead and Sunderland councils.
Residents can recycle their recyclable materials such as paper, bottles, cans and plastic packaging with the blue bins that are provided by the councils or caddy collection service which is collected from people’s doorsteps.
It has been said by Councillor Tracey Dixon who is the lead member for area management and community safety at South Tyneside Council, said: “We are delighted that the amount of waste sent to landfill has been reduced so dramatically and that we are seeing more and more recyclables collected from the doorstep across South Tyneside.
