Hackney Marshes is one of the largest common open Greenland in Greater London. It is 136.01 hectares (336.1 acres) of protected commons. The open grassland is on the western bank of the River Lea in the London Borough of Hackney.
Did you know that the Hackney Marshes was originally a true marsh? But was extensively drained from Medieval times, and rubble was dumped here from buildings damaged by air raids during World War II.
Sport at the Hackney Marshes dates back to 1881, men from Homerton College, then still in the London area, founded the Glyn Cricket Club. Members of the cricket club then decided to form a football section to keep fit during the winter months. The roots of Leyton Orient Football Club can be traced back to this time in history.
Part of the London Olympic park for the Summer Olympics of 2012 was built on Hackney Marshes.
