Aldborough Hatch is an area of London, located in the London Borough of Redbridge. The area is a semi-rural locality situated to the east of Barkingside and Newbury Park, it is noted for Aldborough Hall, a former mansion now used as an equestrian centre. The name ‘Aldborough’ derives from the Alborgh or Albourgh family who occupied the manor in the Middle Ages and the name ‘Hatch’ derives from the hatch gate which originally gave access to Hainault Forest when it stood here.

Until the first half of the 19th Century, Hainault Forest came down to Aldborough Hatch. An Act of Parliament ‘disforestation’ Hainault and 100,000 trees on Crown land were felled within two years, in 1851. When the hamlet’s population expanded following deforestation, the need for a new parish arose. A small chapel attached to Aldborough House had existed since at least the C18th and was used as a chapel-at-ease until St Peter’s Church was built in 1862/3.

Aldborough Hall equestrian centre has been teaching adults and children to ride and improve their riding, as well as training students for their British Horse Society Examinations. Children as young as 4 years of age are taught the basic skills, where they go on to participate in competitions in both Pony club and other competitions. Adults of all ages enjoy learning to ride, or at a higher level improve their skills.
