The area of Limehouse is a district in East London, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is on the north side of the River Thames, close to Rotherhithe. Limehouse covers Limehouse Basin in the west to the edge of the former Chinatown in Pennyfields in the east; and from the Thames in the south to the Victory Bridge at the junction of Ben Jonson Road and Rhodeswell Road in the north.
Limehouse like its close neighbour Wapping benefitted from excellent river links, historically it was better connected by water than land. Limehouse became a significant port in late medieval times, with extensive docks and wharves.

In 1982 Limehouse benefited from the regeneration work started by the London Docklands Development Corporation. By 1984, 8 million square feet of potential commercial development was announced. In 1985 proposals for a 10-12 million square feet development on the 71 acres (290,000 m2) of Canary Wharf were being planned.

In 1820 the Limehouse Basin opened as the Regent’s Canal Dock, connecting the Thames and the canal system. A former marshland, the area of Limehouse became a significant port in late medieval times and soon the shipbuilding, rope-making and merchant industries thrived

Although Limehouse basin is no longer a working dock, its marina remains a working facility. Unfortunately the Wharf Buildings are not in use any more, the majority have been converted to highly desirable residential homes.

Limehouse Basin connects to the Regent’s Canal through the Commercial Road Lock, and the River Thames via Limehouse Basin Lock. The Limehouse Cut connects the Basin to the River Lea in the east.
