Stepney is an area of East London; it falls under the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is close to Whitechapel and Mile End – thus, not far from the City of London. Stepney is on the commuter belt into central London.
The area saw rapid growth in the 19th century with the arrival of immigrants from around the World. The area built a reputation for poverty, overcrowding, violence and political dissent. Like the larger East London area Stepney has experienced some regeneration, but not as much as Bow or Victoria Park areas.
