Londoners elected their new Mayor this month, Labour candidate Sadiq Khan won the majority vote. During the build up to the election all candidates included recycling, waste, green credentials and air quality in their campaign manifesto. Sadiq Khan will now get the opportunity to action his promises.
In his manifesto he mentions that he wants to restore London’s air quality to legal and safe levels, make travel greener and make Oxford Street an entirely pedestrians only zone.
He also made an ambitious target of making London a Zero Carbon city by 2050.
The new mayor has accused the old mayor of taking London from being World Class to Mediocre when it comes to being one of the greenest cities in the World.
When talking about his vision for a greener London, the mayor said:
‘A greener future is central to my vision for London, to the kind of city I want my children to live in. I want, for all of our children, a city in which the air is clean, green space is accessible, and the energy we consume is increasingly drawn from renewable and local sources. And I want them to work in an economy which leads the world in the new low-carbon technologies and industries that represent the jobs and businesses of the future.’
Sadiq Khan promised to reinvigorate recycling, he confessed that Londoners need to ‘up their game’ when it comes to resource efficiency. Mr Khan also said he is determined to ‘make London a low-carbon beacon’.
Let’s wait and see what initiatives the new mayor comes up with to help us recycle more waste and re-use more resources.
